Designing for the web

For a year I worked on BBC’s GEL (Global Experience Language), publishing guidelines for the wider UX team on how to design for the responsive web. Guidelines included typography and layout, local navigation, and interaction patterns such as menus, carousels and accordions. These principles and patterns continue to be used today in all sites and products across the BBC’s digital portfolio.

Responsive principles created in collaboration with Al Jones.

Designing For Touch

In 2013 I proposed that the BBC could improve touch optimisation on the web, particularly to cater for a new breed of hybrid touch/mouse devices where it wasn’t always possible to detect a user’s input method. We published guidelines introducing a touch-first policy for all of our online offerings, including BBC News, Sport, Weather, iPlayer, iWonder and more.
